Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has announced plans to install streetlights along 30km of roads and remove illegal structures on various roads in preparation for the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.
The summit, themed “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” is scheduled for January 2024 at the Speke Resort Munyonyo, where Uganda will take over the chairmanship of NAM from Azerbaijan.
During a press briefing at Hotel Africana, Kisaka outlined comprehensive preparations for the summit, emphasizing the importance of a seamless experience.
KCCA’s initiatives include a 15km road maintenance project targeting flood-prone areas, with 10 roads slated for improvement.
Notable roads in this project include Mukwano Road, Press House Road, Ggaba Road, Cape Road, Salaama Road, Mobutu Road, Prince Badru Kakungulu Road, UCB Rise, Seriso Road, and Tank Hill Road.
Kisaka revealed that the government has released funds, part of the UGX 78bn development funding, empowering KCCA to execute these vital preparations.
Collaboration with the UPDF Engineering brigade to fix roads and eliminate potholes was also highlighted.
Addressing the issue of street children, Kisaka emphasised the ongoing efforts to provide safe spaces and urged vendors to utilize markets.
The revitalisation of the Busega market, coupled with road improvements, aims to offer safe working places for vendors. The reopening of the Kisekka market is seen as a positive development in this regard.
As part of the preparations, Kisaka urged city dwellers to keep the city clean and announced plans to rescue street children, emphasizing, “We are not doing this for the NAM summit, but we want children to be in places where they are supposed to be, not on the street.”
Residents are encouraged to cooperate as the city transforms in anticipation of the historic events set to unfold in January 2024.
