Uganda’s senior rugby team the Lady Rugby Cranes have grabbed silverware at the 2023 Women’s Safari Sevens. The victorious queens ascended to the crown with an epic 15-12 against Kenya Lionesses.
Captain Peace Lekuru, was a constant menace tearing the lioness’s den, with her final touch-down sealing the headlines.
Other scorers Lydia Nakuya and Agnes Namabiro ensured Uganda’s hands are firmly on the jewel.
Captain Lekuru, the architect-in-chief, puts this down to following the script and settling the score for teammates.
“I’m proud of my teammates. We followed the coach’s plan, embraced the structures, and played with a relentless spirit, especially for our injured players,” shares Captain Peace Lekuru.
Lekuru not only captained Team Uganda to victory but ascended as the Top Try Scorer and Most Valuable Player of the 2023 Safari Sevens, throwing praise to the technical team.
“Thanks to Coach Onen and Coach Ben Kigongo for their unwavering support. Winning the Top Try Scorer and Most Valuable Player is an honour,” acknowledges Lekuru.
Coach Charles Onen had praised Lekuru’s leadership on and off the pitch as pivotal to the team’s success.
“Peace Lekuru is the ideal leader—her work rate, input, and output are unparalleled. She is steering the team in the right direction,” comments Head Coach Charles Onen.
Despite delivering the goods, the journey was no smooth sailing for Lady Cranes, who had to interface challenges, injuries, and losses. Yet, a decisive 12-26 triumph over the Cubs propelled them to the finals.
Coach Onen reflects on the courage of his team to
overcome odds.
“We encountered tough moments, injuries, losses, but my girls showed remarkable resilience,” acknowledges Onen.
Sweet revenge adorned the Lady Cranes’ victory, avenging a narrow defeat on day one. A poetic dance of rise after a fall.
