Martin Lukwago, a 45-year-old individual, is currently held by the police for investigation. This development follows his public appearance in Kayunga District, orchestrated by Regional District Commissioner Moses Dumba, who aimed to counter what he termed as National Unity Platform (NUP) “lies” regarding enforced disappearances. The police assert that they are safeguarding Lukwago from potential harm, emphasizing their commitment to both protection and scrutinizing his claims.
Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa region police spokesperson, presented Lukwago to journalists at Kayunga Central Police Station, underscoring their ongoing support for him during investigations. Despite denying his detention, Butoto affirmed Lukwago’s collaboration with the police on inquiries. The police spokesperson disclosed that they are evaluating the authenticity of Lukwago’s statement while restricting his interaction with the media.
Dumba, on Thursday, revealed that Lukwago contested reports of being arrested or kidnapped by security forces, expressing shock at finding his name on the NUP’s list of missing supporters. Lukwago, claiming residence in Luzira, Kampala, lacked official documents to confirm his identity. However, Butoto presented a whitewashed national identification card registration form as evidence.
During a press briefing, Lukwago narrated an incident where he was injured by a speeding vehicle in January 2021. He asserted that NUP leaders, while he was at Mulago National Referral Hospital, approached him to register as a supporter injured during the presidential campaigns, citing financial support for medical bills as his motivation.
While the NUP Secretary-General, Lewis Rubongoya, disputed Lukwago’s identity, a security source hinted at plans to take him to Parliament for a meeting with Speaker Anita Among and a subsequent presentation before MPs.
