The Police in Tororo district are on high alert, launching a widespread manhunt for an unidentified group that ambushed an officer and made off with his AK-47 rifle, loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. The incident unfolded on Saturday, January 6, at approximately 8:00 pm within the South Central East Zone, Eastern Division, Tororo Municipality.
The targeted officer, Richard Otwani, PC number 65417, was en route to provide security for the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) offices when the attack occurred. The stolen rifle is registered as number 835517-0956, intensifying concerns about the potential misuse of the weapon.
A Good Samaritan, identified as a bodaboda rider, rescued Otwani and promptly transported him to Tororo Central Police Station. Initial reports suggest that Otwani sustained injuries to the head, presumably from a blunt object, as he was found lying on the ground, bleeding profusely.
Investigating officers are actively pursuing leads related to the incident, with the case registered under SD 66/06/01/2024. The primary objectives are the recovery of the stolen firearm and the apprehension of the suspects responsible for the attack.
This incident raises concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers and the increasing frequency of attacks resulting in the theft of police firearms. In response to the escalating threat, Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola, had previously issued a warning to all police personnel, advising them against traveling alone with firearms, particularly during the late hours of the night.
