President Yoweri Museveni has called for an emergency meeting with key stakeholders in the sugar industry.
The shortage is attributed to alleged disagreements among politicians regarding the implementation of zoning policies, leading to a surge in sugar prices and a decline in exports.
President Museveni expressed concern over the impact of this crisis on both the sugar manufacturers and sugarcane growers.
In a letter addressed to the prime minister and industry leaders, the president emphasized the need for collaboration to devise a strategic plan for the future of the sugar sector.
The President’s directive is to hold a meeting that includes representatives from sugar manufacturers and growers to discuss the challenges faced by the industry.
“The current shortage of sugar is a matter of great concern, and we must address the issues at hand collaboratively. I call upon the manufacturers of sugar and sugar products, as well as significant sugarcane growers, to come together and engage in a comprehensive discussion about the future of our sugar industry,” President Museveni stated in his letter.
President Museveni further guided that the meeting takes place before the end of January, and urged the prime minister to provide a detailed report to the cabinet in February.
