In a stern and unequivocal message, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, has warned opposition leaders against interrupting the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit scheduled to take place in Munyonyo from January 15 to 20, 2024.
The NAM Summit, a gathering of leaders from across the globe, is expected to address critical issues of international importance.
With representatives from various nations converging to discuss matters ranging from global security to economic cooperation, the summit holds immense significance for fostering diplomatic ties and collaborative efforts on the world stage.
In a press conference held on Tuesday, Baryomunsi emphasized the need for a peaceful and uninterrupted summit.
He stated, “The NAM Summit provides a platform for constructive dialogue and cooperation among nations. We must maintain an environment of tranquillity and allow the discussions to unfold without any disruptions.”
The warning comes amidst concerns about potential disruptions by certain opposition leaders.
Dr Baryomunsi urged all political actors to prioritize the national interest and demonstrate unity during the international event.
“We call upon all political leaders, including those in the opposition, to refrain from any actions that may jeopardize the success of the NAM Summit, we have our differences but let us concentrate on welcoming the guests. This is an opportunity for Uganda to showcase its diplomatic prowess and contribute meaningfully to global discussions,” the minister added.
Security measures are reportedly being bolstered to ensure the smooth functioning of the summit.
