In a bid to ease pressure on existing facilities and bolster city sanitation, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is spearheading the construction of 45 modern public toilets across the city.
The UGX 200 million project prioritizes the Central Business District (CBD), which will receive 20 free public toilets to address sanitation gaps and minimize hygiene-related illnesses.
Whereas the Kampala CBD hosts on average 2.5 million people daily, it only has 16 toilet stances, raising alarming health and sanitation concerns.
To expedite the project, KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, accompanied by health supervisors, recently conducted a guided tour of existing toilet facilities. Their goal: to identify areas for improvement and ensure swift completion of the new facilities.
The initiative envisions a total of 45 new toilet stances strategically located in markets and schools, along with the upgrading of existing amenities.
It is hoped that this comprehensive approach will alleviate pressure on current facilities, enhance sanitation conditions, and eradicate open defecation.
Unlike their predecessors, these modern facilities will be free to use and incorporate leisure elements for added convenience and accessibility.
