The Coordination Office for Prevention of Trafficking in Persons, under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, convened a National Task Force meeting at Silver Springs Hotel Bugolobi to combat trafficking in persons. The primary focus of the meeting was to strategize on enhanced measures for safeguarding migrant workers and curbing the various forms of exploitation they often fall victim to.
CP Twinomujuni Julius, the National Coordinator for the Coordination Office for Prevention of Trafficking in Persons, highlighted the prevalent issue of migrant workers being deceived or enticed with false promises of jobs and scholarships that ultimately lead to various forms of exploitation, particularly in labor and sexual spheres. Notably, Uganda continues to serve as a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking, a comprehensive overview of which will soon be disclosed in the forthcoming National Report on Countering Trafficking in Persons in Uganda for the year 2023.
CP Twinomujuni emphasized the critical need for public awareness and vigilance in the face of trafficking risks. He urged individuals to exercise due diligence when dealing with labor-export companies and individuals, advocating for the verification of promises through relevant authorities. The recommended channels for verification include reaching out to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other authorized entities.
