The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has passed out 555 officers who completed rigorous operational training.
The ceremony, held at the UPDF third division headquarters in Moroto, saw the trainees equipped with essential skills to tackle the persistent challenge of violent cattle theft in the region.
The trainees underwent a comprehensive three-month program covering various aspects, including platoon battle drills, range exercises, fighting patrols, tracking, ambushes, and cordon and search operations aimed at removing illegal guns from Karamojong Manyatta homesteads.
Major General Don Nabasa, Commander of the 3rd Division, highlighted the training focus
“The trainees are now ready to protect Karamoja, having been equipped in different areas crucial for dealing with armed cattle rustlers.”
Despite the commendable achievements, it was noted that about 50 trainees deserted and could not complete the training. Brigadier General Felix Busizoori, Deputy Commander of the 3rd Division, acknowledged this reality during the pass-out ceremony.

However, the operational strategies implemented in 2023 resulted in a notable decline in gun violence and cattle rustling.
As the UPDF officers stand ready to implement their training, the hope is that their disciplined and skilled approach will contribute to a lasting solution in the ongoing battle against cattle rustling in Karamoja.
