President Museveni has appointed former Assistant Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police.
He takes over from Martin Okoth Ochola who retired in March, 2024.
“I confirm that H.E. the President and Commander in Chief of the UPDF has today appointed Mr. Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police replacing IGP Martin Okoth Ochola,” said the Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, Mr. Faruk Kirunda on his official twitter (X) app account.
“Other changes have been effected in the Uganda Police Force,” he added.
Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime has been holding the office since Ochola’s exit.
This website understands Maj. Gen. Katsigazi was not considered for IGP over the manner in which he has been handling several high profile crime investigations.
Byakagaba previously served as commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police.
He also headed police’s counter terrorism docket, a position that saw him lead specialised and high risk operations against Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) extremists.
Byakagaba’s appointment was a surprise considering that he recently retired from the police force.
